Good news regarding the transmission of Covid-19 by Mosquitoes!
In recent days, the results of an experimental study conducted by a team of entomologists and virologists of “Istituto Superiore di Sanità” and of the Zooprophylaxis Experimental “Delle Venezie” have been disclosed to examine the ability of Mosquitoes to transmit the Covid-19 virus.
As it is known, in fact, Mosquitoes are vectors of various Viruses, among which we remember the Zika Virus, the Dengue, the West Nile, the Malaria, the Chikungunya. Following the health emergency dictated by the explosion of the Covid-19 Virus, it was necessary to test, through experimental infection tests, the vectorial competence of the Mosquitoes and their ability to actively transmit the Virus.
Fortunately, this study shows that both the Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the Common Mosquito (Culex pipiens) are unable to transmit the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Scientists provided a meal of blood infected with high doses of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to mosquitoes housed in high-security labs. Research has shown that the virus, once penetrated into the mosquito, is unable to replicate itself and therefore be subsequently inoculated by the mosquito through a sting.
The definitive results will provide that experimental evidence, which for the moment is only theoretically hypothesized, which will allow to scientifically exclude the involvement of mosquitoes in the possible transmission of COVID-19, responding clearly and definitively to the legitimate concerns related to the role of the mosquito in the transmission of numerous diseases. Concerns made even more current by the COVID-19 emergency and the beginning of the hot season.
