SPECIES: ORIENTAL COCKROACH (order Blattodea)

COMMON NAME: black cockroach common beetle.

SIZE: 20-32 mm.

LIFECYCLE: Egg - nymph - adult (lives for 1-2 years); Cycle Period: 360 days; egg sac size: 10-12 mm; No. generations per year: polycyclic; No. female egg sacs: 8 - -30, containing 12 eggs each.

FEATURES: Spread initially in Eastern Europe, now cosmopolitan. Colour basically brown, almost black. Presents sexual dimorphism: the male has normally developed wings, while females have very short front wings and atrophic rear wings. This species is well known in the home. It usually enters through pipes, drains and packaging containing egg sacs. As it is unable to climb smooth walls and ceilings, the species is mainly seen around floor level.

HABITAT: Cool environments (20°-25°C) such as cellars, basements, sewers, drainpipes, toilets, wall crevices, waste deposits, etc.

DIET: Omnivorous, voracious species; prefers food waste.

DAMAGE: cockroaches are mechanical, active vectors (defecating and regurgitating while feeding and contaminating food, tableware and utensils) of several species of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacterial dysentery, typhoid, polio, cholera, botulism, salmonella, various allergies, etc.
