COMMON NAME: Grain weevil
SIZE: 3-5 mm long
LIFECYCLE: The females, after digging a hole in the kernel with their rostrum, lay eggs in the seeds; the egg-laying period can last several months, during which more than 200 eggs are laid. After about one to two weeks after laying, the larva hatches and feeds on the starch of the kernel until maturity (about a month). On reaching maturity, still within the seed, the larva pupates. At least three generations are produced each year under optimal conditions, there can be as many as six.
FEATURES: uniform brown colour, with a long red rostrum. The Grain weevil is photophobic and lives deep inside piles of grain.
HABITAT: granaries, warehouses, silos, etc.
DIET/DAMAGE: They mainly infest cereals, but can also be found in pasta, wheat, nuts, etc.
