COMMON NAME: Red spider mite

SIZE: 2 mm; visible to the naked eye.

FEATURES: a very common species, it is known as the "red spider mite" due to the colour of its body. Not to be confused with Tetranychus urticae, a mite of the Tetranychidae family also known as the "red spider mite", which attacks many types of flowering plants, including various fruit trees.

HABITAT: infests rooftoops, windowsills and walls exposed to the sun during the spring.

DIET: feeds off bird droppings.

DAMAGE: does not constitute a health hazard to humans, nor to vertebrates in general, because their larvae parasitise insects.
