SPECIES: Xestobium rufovillosum (order Coleoptera)

COMMON NAME: Death watch beetle (its sexual call consists of banging its head against the wood, creating an audible, but quiet, tapping at regular intervals.)

SIZE: 3 - 7 mm

Eggs laid: from 40 to 60.

Egg incubation: 15 - 60 days depending on temperature.

Larval period: 1 - 10 years.

Adult lifespan: 15 - 30 days.

Adults emerge: from April to May.

Wood attacked: Hard woods (oak, chestnut, ash and beech), rarely found in conifers.

Materials: wooden structures, fixtures e equipment.

Larval burrows: meandering, with alterations due to moulds.

Frass: rare, coarse with flattened balls.

Exit holes: numerous, circular in shape, with a diameter of 2.5 - 4 mm.
