Dengue Virus Emergency

2024-03-20 Gallura Disinfestazioni posted:

Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus infected with the Dengue virus (DENV).

It is an infectious disease widely spread in tropical/sub-tropical regions, which was able to reach our continent with some epidemic outbreaks also found in Italy, in the areas where the vector is present and active.

Although in most cases the infection presents asymptomatic or as a self-limiting febrile illness, serious forms have been described, sometimes with fatal outcome.

To date, it is considered worldwide to be the most important viral disease transmitted from mosquitoes to humans, with the number of cases increasing significantly in recent decades.

It is endemic in over 100 countries (Africa, America, South and South East Asia, Western Pacific) and travel-associated importation cases are frequently reported in Europe.

According to the WHO, approximately half of the world's population is now at risk of dengue, with an estimated 100-400 million infections per year.

At present, the cases recorded in Italy are all of people who traveled from countries where the infection is endemic. Among the most affected is Brazil, which has over one million infected since the beginning of 2024 and 450 confirmed deaths.

The main vector for transmitting the virus is the mosquito species Aedes aegypti, commonly known as the Egyptian mosquito.

The infection is transmitted to humans through the bites of mosquitoes that have previously bitten an infected person. In light of these data, prevention, remediation and disinfestation activities become fundamental in order to avoid the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

With regard to raising the alert level regarding the spread of dengue at Italian entry points, it is essential to pay attention to the provisions of the circular dated 14 March 2024 from the Ministry of Health regarding health surveillance measures against the dengue virus.

We remain available to guarantee technical and operational support with disinfestation interventions in full compliance with the dictates of the Ministry of Health and the WHO regarding safeguards and safety measures to be used.
