Dengue virus case in Olbia

2024-04-26 Gallura Disinfestazioni posted:

As reported by local newspapers and the official website of the Municipality of Olbia, the Gallura Local Health Authority has highlighted the presence of a suspected case of Dengue Virus in our territory.

What is the Dengue Virus?

Dengue is an infectious viral disease widely spread in tropical/sub-tropical regions, which has been able to reach our continent with some epidemic outbreaks also found in Italy. Although in most cases the infection presents asymptomatic or as a self-limiting febrile illness, serious forms have been described, sometimes with fatal outcome.

How is the Dengue Virus contracted?

Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus infected by the Dengue virus (DENV), the main vector of transmission is the mosquito species Aedes aegypti, commonly known as the Egyptian mosquito.

The infection is transmitted to humans through the bites of mosquitoes that have previously bitten an infected person.

To date, it is considered worldwide to be the most important viral disease transmitted from mosquitoes to humans, with the number of cases increasing significantly in recent decades.

What needs to be done to avoid the proliferation of the Dengue Virus?

Prevention, remediation and disinfestation activities become fundamental in order to avoid the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

We therefore recommend larvo-mosquito-cidal disinfestation interventions to avoid the development of outbreaks and adultsicidal disinfestation interventions to eliminate existing ones.

We also recommend:

- to avoid the formation of stagnant water in your homes

- to avoid prolonged parking in marshy areas

- the use of mosquito nets on windows and doors

- the use of skin repellents

- the autonomous use of insecticides for the general public where necessary

We also recommend reading the circular of 14 March 2024 from the Ministry of Health regarding health surveillance measures against the Dengue virus.

We remain available to guarantee technical and operational support with disinfestation interventions in full compliance with the dictates of the Ministry of Health and the WHO regarding safeguards and safety measures to be used.
