Tropical Viruses in Italy: What You Need to Know

2025-07-07 Gallura Disinfestazioni posted:

In recent years, with increased international travel and climate change, there has been increasing talk of tropical viruses. Once considered exclusive to distant regions, they are now beginning to appear in Italy.

But what exactly are they?

Tropical viruses are pathogens typically found in equatorial and tropical regions, such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Among the best-known are the Zika virus, the Chikungunya virus, and the Dengue virus. These viruses are transmitted primarily through mosquito bites, particularly those of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species.

In Italy, the presence of these mosquito vectors has increased, especially in the Northern and Central regions, thanks in part to milder temperatures and milder winters. This has led to the possibility of local transmission of some of these viruses, which were previously considered absent or very rare in our country.

Two recent cases in particular are raising concerns: the first is a dengue outbreak in Brescia, where widespread pest control has been implemented; the second is a case of chikungunya in the Ravenna area, in Lugo, where a massive mosquito disinfestation program has also been implemented. Both infections were contracted abroad.

The spread of these diseases can cause symptoms such as high fever, joint pain, rashes, and, in some cases, more serious complications.

To prevent the risk of infection, it is important to adopt a few simple measures: use repellent, avoid areas with high mosquito populations, install mosquito nets, and eliminate any standing water near homes.

Furthermore, just as occurred in the Brescia and Ravenna areas, it is essential to develop a mosquito disinfestation plan to try to address the root of the problem.

Aiming to weaken mosquito populations is one of the goals of pest control interventions, thus drastically reducing the risk of contracting the virus.

In conclusion, the growing presence of tropical viruses in our country urges us to be more aware and take the necessary precautions, especially during the warmer months. Staying informed and vigilant is the best way to protect ourselves and our communities.
