Today we want to talk to you about an important and highly topical issue: West Nile Virus and its presence in Italy.
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a virus transmitted primarily by mosquitoes of the Culex genus.
In Italy, the first cases date back to 1998, initially found only in horses. The first cases identified in humans were in 2008, and the spread of this virus has been closely monitored in recent years, and in 2025, there is considerable concern among health authorities and the public.
From the moment of the bite of an infected mosquito, the incubation period varies between 2 and 21 days, depending on the individual's immune system status. In most cases, the infection is asymptomatic; however, the symptoms are similar to those of the flu, with fever and aches. Severe cases are estimated at 5-10%.
Several cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported in 2025, especially in northern and central Italy. Most infected people have mild or asymptomatic symptoms, but in some rarer cases, the virus can cause serious complications such as encephalitis or meningitis, especially in the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.
Italian health authorities have intensified awareness campaigns and both adulticidal and larvicidal disinfestation interventions, urging the population to protect themselves from mosquito bites, especially in the evening and nighttime. Environmental controls and epidemiological surveillance activities have also been strengthened to promptly identify any outbreaks. Furthermore, among the preventive measures, it has been decided to suspend blood and blood component donations for 28 days for those who have stayed in the provinces of Modena, Oristano, and Venice.
To reduce the risk of infection, it is advisable to use repellent, wear covering clothing, and install mosquito nets. It is also important to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, such as plant pots, bins, or uncovered containers.
These measures are much more effective when combined with mosquito disinfestation interventions, which, if performed regularly, can eliminate a large portion of mosquito populations, drastically reducing the risk of infection.
West Nile Virus represents an ongoing challenge to public health in Italy, but with good information and preventive measures, we can significantly reduce the risks. Stay up to date with official news and continue to follow our blog.
