The number of West Nile virus cases has risen to 33, the latest being a 72-year-old man with underlying health conditions, hospitalized in critical condition at San Martino Hospital in Oristano (the first in Sardinia).
Meanwhile, the Local Health Authority (ASL) has activated several protocols: mosquito disinfestations, epidemiological investigations, and restrictions on blood donations.
West Nile Virus (WNF) is not transmitted from person to person, but its primary vector is mosquitoes. The incubation period varies from 2 to 14 days, up to 21 days in immunocompromised individuals.
80% of those infected are asymptomatic, and the remaining 20% develop mild symptoms such as fever, nausea, and rashes.
In frail individuals, it can degenerate into severe neurological conditions.
Prevention and mosquito control are the only remedies, as there are no vaccines or specific treatments.
The outbreak in the Oristano area joins the eight confirmed cases in Campania, with four people hospitalized in intensive care, and the seven cases recorded in the province of Latina, including the death of an 82-year-old woman.
Since the beginning of the year, over a dozen cases of West Nile virus infection and two deaths have been recorded in Italy: in addition to the woman from Fondi who died in recent days, a 75-year-old man from the province of Novara also died from the virus in March.
Although West Nile is a virus already known and addressed nationwide last year, it is necessary to maintain a high level of vigilance and follow all the protocols indicated by the ISS.
As already mentioned, it is essential to intervene with targeted disinfestation interventions that lead to the elimination of the mosquito population, the main vector of the virus.
